Sidewalk Rebuilds After Fallen Trees & Root Heaving

New York City's mature oaks, elms, sycamores and ginkgos give our neighborhoods character — and wreck a lot of sidewalks. NYC Sidewalk Pros rebuilds walkways after tree falls, root heaving and stump removal damage, with root barrier installations that prevent the same slab from lifting again two years later.

A fallen tree typically damages sidewalks in two ways: the trunk's weight cracks the slab on impact, and the uprooting pulls up the base material around the slab. Both have to be repaired together, or the new concrete settles within a season. Our crews work with your tree service to coordinate stump grinding, then re-establish the compacted base before the new pour.

  • Coordination with your tree service or arborist
  • Stump grinding cleanup & root removal
  • Engineered base re-establishment with crushed stone
  • Root barrier installation (linear deep-set HDPE)
  • Reinforced slab pour with rebar
  • Insurance documentation for tree-fall claims

Root heaving is the slow-motion version of the same problem. Tree roots grow under the slab, swell with moisture and gradually lift the concrete — usually one corner at a time. By the time a panel is tilted more than an inch, the root is the size of your forearm and grinding won't help. The slab has to come out, the root has to be cut back to a safe distance, and a root barrier has to be installed before the new slab is poured.

We never remove healthy mature trees just to make sidewalk repair easier — mature canopy is too valuable in New York City. Instead, we install a 24" or 36" deep HDPE root barrier between the tree and the new slab. The roots redirect downward instead of lifting the concrete. It's a one-time fix that keeps the tree healthy and the sidewalk flat for decades.

Common Questions About
Tree Fall Damage in NYC

NYC sidewalk repair frequently asked questions

Speak with our office directly: (212) 555-0142

Yes, when the tree damaged a covered structure like a sidewalk, fence or house. Standard HO-3 policies cover tree removal up to a per-tree cap (usually $500–$1,000) and full slab repair separately. We document both.

We coordinate with your preferred arborist or recommend one of our partners. We focus exclusively on the concrete portion of the project.

Very. Properly installed 24" or 36" HDPE barriers redirect 95%+ of root growth downward. We've revisited installs from 2010–2015 and seen no recurrence of heaving.

Sometimes — if the lift is under 1/4" we can grind the trip hazard and seal the surface. Anything over 1/2" usually requires replacement because the slab edge is undermined.
