Bluestone is a hard, dense sandstone quarried in northeast Pennsylvania and shipped to NYC since the 1860s. It's the original NYC sidewalk material and remains the required material in most landmarked districts. When properly bedded and pointed, bluestone outlasts concrete by 50–100 years — but when it shifts, cracks or loses its mortar joints, it has to be addressed by a contractor who knows the material.
Re-bed and re-point loose or settled bluestone slabs
Most damaged bluestone we encounter is salvageable. We carefully lift the stone, re-bed it on a fresh cement mortar bed over compacted base, then re-point the joints with a lime-rich mortar that matches the original. Stones that are truly broken get replaced with thickness-matched Pennsylvania bluestone we source from the same quarries the original NYC contractors used.
ADA compliance is the tricky part in historic districts. Federal law requires accessible ramps; LPC requires the historic material aesthetic. We work with both standards by installing ADA ramps in bluestone with detectable warning panels integrated into the natural stone matrix.
